Quote: “So, like its supposed to be my destiny, you see?”
Concept: A religious mystic in an order of Hermetic scholars.
Description: An average WASP mid-teenager, Robert stands about 5′ 8″ and weighs about 140 lbs. He has dark blonde hair and greenish-blue eyes. He has a black birthmark of a spiderweb on his right rear shoulder, about 3″ across. He generally dresses in T‑shirts (usually with a sports logo), jeans and sneakers.
Prelude: Robert was born to his parents in their Rio de Jañero home, where they were employed with a pharmaceutical company. When he was born, several omens were revealed to his parents and others, showing that Robert had a destiny to fulfill and that the Tradition who reared him would gain mightily from that Destiny. Particularly, the Celestial Chorus was most interested in him, having sensed within him a power that would greatly aid their Tradition, but Robert’s atheist father would not even consider him joining the Chorus.
In order to throw off any trackers, Robert was supposedly put up for adoption but was secretly sent to his father’s parents to be raised in comparative privacy. Since his psychiatrist grandfather was secretly an Order of Hermes magi, Robert Awakened quite early in his lifetime, the only one of his parents’ six children to do so. That apparently has something to do with the strange occurrences that have dogged Robert’s life ever since birth. These occurences included odd and unlikely coincidences, favorable accidents, and, most importantly, visions.
The first vision was when he was in church: at the age of nine Robert wasn’t particularly religious but he somehow felt the need to attend church that Sunday. After the service, Robert hung around, and thus saw his vision of a unicorn leap from the stained glass window at the side of the church and approach him. Every one of his senses were focussed on the sight: he could smell the faint apple scent of the unicorn, hear the crystalline striking of its hooves on the stone floor, and, ultimately reach out and feel the soft fur of its forehead and the smooth curved surface of its horn. The unicorn touched Robert over the heart, and he fell into a swoon. He was discovered by a caretaker several hours later.
That vision appeared to Awaken him partially: he became more aware of things, and this was noticed by his grandfather, who began subtly training him in the arts he would need as a Mage: Latin, for one, and the arts and sciences. Robert learned quickly, almost knowing but yet unaware of the role he was being trained for.
His second vision at the age of 15 Awakened him fully, much to his grandfather’s surprise. Again, it was a vision of the unicorn. It approached him again, leaping from a metallic sticker on a car he was passing in his apartment’s underground garage: Robert this time knelt to it, and the unicorn touched its horn to Roberts shoulders and forehead in what felt like an investititure or knighting.
Magick: Robert naturally took to the Spheres closest to both his father’s and grandfather’s chosen professions and interests: the spheres of Life and Mind. He no longer requires a focus to work Life or Mind magick. He is also familiar with the Sphere of Forces but only marginally, and needs a focus to wield it, which is a bronze medallion with the Seal of Solomon that he wears on a leather cord around his neck.
Backgrounds: His Destiny is proving to be a serious matter: it seems he is somehow destined to aid a diverse group of Mages in seeking the meaning of the Tenth Sign and the unification of the Spheres of Magick, a major step towards Ascension, but the precise nature of that aid, or who or what he will aid, is still a mystery. That destiny has interfered with his life on several occasions, many times in mysterious ways, and this destiny seems involved with the strength of his Avatar. Finally, he has the money of his father and grandfather to call upon in need.
Merits: Even at his age he has developed a reputation as a master Mage in the making: his obvious excellence certainly furthers that reputation. [Prodigy (3), Reputation (2)] Also, his destiny seems to aid him in ways that would seem impossible to any one else, resulting in a fantastic streak of luck. [Luck (3)]
Flaws: However, not everyone is impressed with his actions or his destiny, and see only a precocious teenager who should remain silent and respect his elders and betters. [Age (1), Child (3)] His apparent destiny has also made him overconfident of that destiny, many times pushing the limit of his luck. [Overconfident (1)] Finally the run of coincidences and luck he so often maintains, plus the occasional vision he undergoes, all have a slightly strange effect on the world around him: odd occurrences seemed to follow him, mythical creatures are reported being seen, miracle cures and punishments happen, etc. [Echoes (1), Strangeness (1)
Equipment: Clothing; notebook computer; pilot’s log book; magnifying glass; Gold MasterCard.
Roleplaying Hints: Robert is destined for great things, if he can only realize what they are. Until then he keep searching for his purpose in life.
