| Within the local gaming group, whenever someone mentions anything related to ninjas, someone is bound to say “NINNNNJAS!” There is a reason behind the craziness. It was at a small home convention where there was a pickup game of Bushido, an old but still reputable roleplaying game based around the mythic Japanese feudal era, meaning that not only there were Samurai warriors and ninjas but kami, oni, mystics and other beings and professions from myth and legend. Out assorted group included two Samurai, one higher ranked than the other, plus a number of other characters, loosely connected but all in service to the same feudal lord. It was that lord that ordered the group to go to a neighboring lord’s castle and steal back an Imperial seal that the other lord had ‘acquired’ and was making vague statements about his Imperial favor. As it was by the lord’s command, we were obligated to obey, The actual mission was successful, right up to the moment the group was going to leave, when the captain of the guard stopped us. Unbeknownst to us, the ninja clan in service to the group’s lord was causing chaos in the town to cover our escape, and the guard was suspicious of us. The game master asked what we were doing and I, playing the higher ranked Samurai, didn’t have anything to say in reply. That’s when the player of the lower-ranked Samurai down at the other end of the table pointed and yelled out “NINJAS!” The game master had him roll to see how well he persuaded the guards to run off and leave us alone. It was one of the times when the dice listened. The player rolled a “1”. Since in Bushido, the lower the roll, the better the outcome, this was considered a critical success. The game master rolled a “20”, which was a critical failure. The game master replied by saying “The guard captain looks back in the direction of the castle and yells ‘NINJAS!’ ” The player characters were ignored and we walked out of the castle untouched. And thus the cry of “NINJAS!” was embedded in the social consciousness of the local gaming community. TeraS is a friend and an individual with an interest in succubi, as can be seen in her website. I regular inform her about any succubus appearances I discover, especially in animé. As this story does involve a succubus in some small way, I sent her a review copy, and this is part of what she said about it. It’s quite a enthralling story about a universe that’s changed, in some ways good, in other ways not so much so, but there is one underlying truth. It doesn’t matter how magic has changed you, inside you are the same person. It’s what you do now that matters. … Vanity, the main character of this work, is simply enthralling. She’s complex, intelligent, but most of all, she’s something very special in a world where darkness holds many and causes much pain and more. She’s … hope. Quite a lot of hope for not just herself and those she calls friends, but for many others. … There’s a good deal of mystery as well, not only in the world, but in the characters which sets up the series going forwards and I think that all works well. The story solidly sets up things going forwards and there is a lot to explore just from this work alone. There is a mystery, one that affects Vanity and I’ll be looking to see where that goes. Five out of five pitchforks.
The whole review is here. Five out of five … I am stunned and even a little embarrassed (but in a good way.) This is the cover to my short story ‘Undercover Unicorn’. This is the cover to ‘Undercover Unicorn’ available through SmashWords and soon through other ePub distributors as well. It is based on a pair of images provided by photographer on DeviantArt named Cathleen Tarawhiti. It was difficult finding a decent image for the cover: I wanted an image that I could transform in the visual design of a unicorn of the story, which meant the golden mark on her forehead, the snow-white hair and the blue eyes. I also wanted an image that I could afford, given my limited budget, which was a major sticking point. Then I discovered Cathleen Tarawhiti through DeviantArt and FaceBook: Cathleen is a photographer in New Zealand who takes some amazing photographs of some amazingly beautiful (and handsome, there are some males involved, too) models and offers them to be licensed as book covers. The cover to my short story ‘Undercover Unicorn’. I just released my latest short story, entitled ‘Undercover Unicorn’. Its the story of a team of FBI agents in a world where a small but significant number of people were Changed: infused with and transformed by magic patterned after some form of legendary or mythological creature. It is now available through SmashWords and soon through other ePub distributors as well. The story is an introduction to a world changed when people suddenly gained the magical abilities associated with such creatures as unicorns, dragons, trolls and succubi. It didn’t matter who they were or how they would use their magic, and so it was only natural that some would use them for criminal or anti-social purposes. Thus others were recruited as police and Federal agents to combat them. This world is seen through the eyes of the various members of an FBI team who must deal with such new things as illegal magical drugs, human trafficking operations to create new illegal Changers, and literal monsters. The lead character shown here is Vanity, a human unicorn (as denoted by the gold unicorn mark on her forehead, her impossible blue eyes and her silver white hair) and an FBI agent working out of the parallel offices in Lafayette, Indiana and West Lafayette, Indiana. (The reason why there are two stations there is because the border of the Zone, the stable area where magic exists, cuts across between both cities, and so there are offices both inside and outside the Zone at this location.) She leads a team of Changers on assignment in this area in enforcing both the existing and the new laws whenever Changers get involved. The core of this story and the subsequent stories (one already written and needing cover artwork and three more in the development and writing stages) is based on a roleplaying gamed named DragonStorm created by artist Sue van Camp. DragonStorm is a fantasy RPG based on the concept of allowing the players to play the monsters, albeit in a heroic manner. The world is a place where massive magical storms occurred centuries before, devastating the land, for which the “monstrous” creatures such as dragons, unicorns, werewolves and the like were blamed: actually, they were victims, and the victors here, wizards who sought to use the magical power inherent in these creatures, were the actual villains, because it was their first massive ritual in using that power that caused (and still cause) the storms in the first place. I had the notion of adapting the RPG system for use in the present day: that never truly worked out, but the underlying concept of magic set loose in a world eventually became the basis for this story and the concept of characters who are magical creatures became the basis for the characters that eventually emerged for the story. The reasons and history behind the magic in this story is quite different, and a mystery to me as well, until I actually wrote myself into another story as a character to ask the questions I needed answered in order to understand them. That will be revealed in a later story. The story itself emerged from the first line: “The cupcakes the nice old church lady was handing out were doped. I knew that because I’m a unicorn in disguise.” Once I had that, I had to continue writing just to see what all was happening there. (Originally, the title was ‘A Unicorn in Disguise’ but I changed that to ‘Undercover Unicorn’ because the latter fit better on the final cover. That also led to modifying the first line, slightly.) That lead to realizing this was as much a police procedural story as it was a fantasy story, and I am a fan of television team police procedural and detective series such as Law and Order and its various spin offs, Dragnet and Adam-12 from my youth and, most recently, Castle. Hence, there is police work involved as much and possibly even more than fantasy, although all of that work is performed by fantasy creatures using magic in the course of their jobs. This story was in the works for some time, and one of the reasons for that was that it was difficult finding cover artwork for it. Finally, though, I was rewarded when I discovered a photographer on DeviantArt named Cathleen Tarawhiti who provided the photographs I used to create the cover image. I will be writing more about the creation of the cover image in a subsequent post. I just finished compiling and classifying all of my photographs from this past GenCon and posted to my photo album here.
Another record-setting year with over 50,000 people attending. Lots of great costumes and costumers this year, from superheroes and super villains to MMORPG characters and animé / manga characters. Last weekend, I attended an event in Chicago where I presented material on writing fiction. I was to make some handouts available but because of a combination of an old printer and a new wireless router, I was unable to have them at the event. Therefore, I am making them available here, mainly because I said that I would. Continue reading «Writing Resources» Its not what I planned for my first official blog post, but this is something very worth mentioning. Steve Creech is a friend of mine. He was my game master and dungeon master for a number of games and campaigns, most especially the one that I created the characters of Chime and Duncan. He’s also known in the gaming community and he edited and bought a piece I wrote for “Torn Asunder” which was published by Bastion Press. Well, he is in some difficulty. Back in April, he suffered what apparently was some form of aneurism, fell and suffered a concussion. He was unconscious for several hours and wound up in the hospital for several days. That wasn’t the end: he also suffered a range of medical problems including drug allergies and yet another stay in the hospital, plus a false diagnosis of bacterial meningitis in the following weeks. Since then, his mental state is varied: on some days he is very coherent then some times he’s barely able to care for himself. There is still no word on what actually happened or is happening. The tests may not be finished until October. His wife stayed home from work to care for him so they lost income and neither have insurance. Now they’re looking at medical bills with big numbers on them with more in the future: at least one specialist costs $1000 for just an office visit. That is why they started an IndeGoGo campaign to help defray them. As a favor to him, I drove down to his house and taped a short video of him and his wife explaining their situation and did a short editing job to produce the video, taking images they took of him in the hospital to cover the edits. This is what I came up with. With the New Year, it is traditional to make various resolutions for the coming year. Plus, I do need to set some goals for the year, at least for the first half. Therefore, these are my New Year’s Resolutions for the year 2014. - Release the videos from the 2005 Nebula Awards DVD, in particular the Neil Gaiman toastmaster speech and the Kevin O’Donnell and Anne McCaffrey award recipient speeches. What I need to do is finish massaging the copyright and credit pages and convert the video files into something the video editor can handle.
- Write more publishable fiction and sell it.
- Publish the old fiction I wrote and sold years ago. I published one story already and just need to format the others and create the cover artwork for them.
- Produce audio versions of the old fiction. I have a good radio voice so this would be an interesting experiment.
- Become proficient in at least one new programming language, most likely Java for the Android platform, plus becoming more proficient with HTML5 and jQuery.
- And speaking of languages, add more languages and Unicode character sets to the Unicode Character Keyboard plugin I wrote.
